Mariaplan, Kungsladugård
& Sandarna
Mariaplan is the starting point — a lively square in the heart of Kungsladugård where Slottsskogsgatan, Kungsladugårdsgatan and Mariagatan meet in a vibrant hub shaped since the early 1900s. From the very beginning, the area was planned as a gathering place for everyday life, commerce and movement — a character that still defines the neighborhood today.
From here, Mariagatan stretches westward through connected city blocks, past Älvsborgsgatan — known as The Workers’ Avenue — and further into Sandarna. Here, Fridhemsgatan continues as a natural extension of the same urban corridor, planned as part of the area’s cohesive expansion during the 1910s–1940s.
The area now known as the Kungssten Industrial Area was included in this urban planning and developed alongside Sandarna, combining housing, local businesses and industrial functions close to the harbor.
Further west, the streets connect to Karl Johansgatan — one of Gothenburg’s most important historic main streets. From there, the flow continues eastward via Älvsborgsgatan and back up toward Slottsskogsgatan, linking the neighborhoods together in a natural loop of streets, people and urban life.
Along the way, you’ll discover a small-scale and personal mix of shops, crafts, cafés and restaurants. Large chains do not define the area — instead, it is shaped by local businesses that together create the feeling of a small town within the city.
The well-preserved landshövdingehus and functionalist buildings from the 1910s to 1950s, together with green courtyards and calm streets, give the area its unique character. Behind every block is a story, and in every street, that story continues to live on.
Whether you live here or are just visiting, there are always new places to discover. By supporting local businesses, you help preserve vibrant neighborhoods — places where people know each other and community still has room to thrive.
